Plusnet sent to the headmaster that is the ASA

thinkbroadband :: Plusnet sent to the headmaster that is the ASA
Quote:

Plusnet is this weeks broadband provider to feature in the list of adverts that have been complained about, a total of four viewers raised complaints about the series of adverts that ran promoting an offer than ran out back in February 2013.

Three issues were raised but only the second two points were upheld by the ASA. Plusnet were made to make changes to ensure significant conditions were clear and that availability of a promotion was made clear.

  • One viewer complained that the on-screen text was illegible. The ASA noted that the text was white on a black background and was considered legible for those who made a positive effort to read all the text.
  • Another viewer questioned the content of the ad, because the offer did not apply to everyone. The ASA found this part to be contradictory, as the advert said 'New customers only', but Plusnet said it was available to existing customers too, thus the complaint has been upheld as existing customers would have believed it was not available to them.
  • The other complaints focused on whether it was clear that the offer only applied if broadband and calls with line rental was purchased. The requirement to take line rental at £13.99 was the ASA concluded not sufficiently prominent and the advert in its form several months ago gave the impression that the offer of half price broadband applies to all broadband packages Plusnet sold.

The requirement for line rental is becoming an increasing factor for people to get the best broadband deals, we believe that a large part of this is that the larger providers see revenue from calls as a way to subsidise very low price point broadband. The year on year price increases in voice line rental, when the cost from Openreach has been decreasing also support this notion. If you have the money to pay the voice line rental 12 months in advance, many providers have offers which can save you around £5 per month so it is worth looking for these and even if there is no obvious offer on their website, call them as some don't openly promote their best line rental deals.

Off label uses for Sky Wireless Connector?

I have given up trying to use my Sky Wireless Connector for the purpose intended and switched to a Home Plug solution. It kept going to sleep and it made the new features on the iPad app unusable.

So..it made me wonder whether the box could be configured to be used as a router or a repeater. It looks very similar to the TL-WR702N which has all these features. Of course it will depend on the firmware Sky have put on it and they are notorious for trying to look things down.

Explain my stats please

Yesterday afternoon I had an engineering in to look at my system for slow speeds, fibre installed just over a week ago.

Today I did a speed test and got 38.4 download and 6.61 upload. However my Sky router reports 22400 download and 5584 upload. The strange thing to me is that the Hub has been showing the same values for a couple of days, absolutely no change in the values whatsoever. Can this be explained, is something I am doing incorrectly?

How long approx for fibre change over

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can give me some advice on how long the change from BB unlimited to Fibre unlimited takes please?? I am upgrading to fibre, so I have ordered Sky Talk as well as it is part of the process to get Fibre and plus the deal will work out cheaper for phone calls.

I tried to put the order through Sunday, but the system was down and I have to call back Tuesday. Just wondering what the turn around is, as the sky website and BT infinity says I can get Fibre now, which according to BT in 29 Mb Download nearly 6 Mb Upload, and sky says about 29 Mb Download only.

Also will an engineer need to come to install fibre and if so I am guessing that it will be an openreach engineer. Any advice on the upgrade process it appreciated. Thanks.

Using your Sky box after leaving Sky - Is what Sky do fair play??

Having made the decision to leave and very comfortable with that decision, we have a couple of weeks left to catch up on things recorded on the box before Sky is turned off.

Now this has got me thinking..........

Is it really fair that you cannot watch what you have recorded on the box after you have ended your subscription? After all you recorded them while subscribing, so you have paid for right to watch them. If like us you have a lot of stuff that was recorded off free to air channels are Sky legally obliged to allow you to be able to watch them even though you are no longer subscribing to their TV service?

It does seem a bit unfair, bearing in mind many people have actually bought their boxes from Sky, recorded while subscribing but then not being able to watch what they have paid for, unless of course you pay Sky the £10 a month fee for using and recording on the box you have already bought.

I wonder what they would do if legally challenged???

Just a thought, I couldn't really be bothered with the hassle but it does stink a bit that they block you from watching things you have already recorded. Unless of course I have misunderstood it and I can still watch stuff, I expect someone can clarify that.....

DynDNS would/do you pay?

DynDNS have changed their T&Cs again.

It used to be possible to set up a free account, but I guess that the service has become too popular. They changed it so that you could set up a trial account and cancel that after a month of so, leaving just one DynDNS address available to use.

Sadly now it appears that when the trial ends, you no longer have this option. You now have to pay the annual fee. You also need a Credit Card to set up the account.

Do you think that this is fair? What about safe?

There are alternatives available. Sadly you need to run a separate application on a desktop in order to maintain the WAN IP Address on the relevant servers as Sky's routers only allow DynDNS to be used.

No-IP is one such site. There are plenty more. If you install a custom firmware such as OpenWRT or DD-WRT on a cable router you can gain access to these through the router.

Personally I would love Sky to add the alternatives to the whole range of Sky routers. Do you agree?

I have started a thread on the Sky forums. Hopefully this will attract some attention too.

Button Lag on every FIFA online game at all times

$

I have button lag on every online FIFA game at all times with any settings wire or wireless. It was the same with previous ISP. I changed to sky hoping it would fix the issue with a change of ISP but it remains the same.

It is not related to the xbox or settings as it is ok offline. Only online does button delay occur. It is not related to EA servers as everybody else playing has a perfect connection, regardless of internet speed during the games. Only I have a problem.

My NAT is open fully and I rarely have problems connecting or being disconnected. I've tried opening ports and it makes no difference.

And my problem is persistent at all times and all settings (It is the same at all times of the day, even at 3am), which tells you it's my connection. It is the same with or without wires.

I investigated it on all the other forums and there is no solution, which indicates it is a connection problem and definitely not settings or EA. If it was EA, the problem would be intermittent and not constant over a period of months and also would affect people in the games I play which it doesn't.

The only resolution appears to be when people changed ISP, which doesn't confirms it is nothing to do with EA or Xbox settings, hardware etc, but the actual type of connection. What the problem is, is not clear though.

Does anyone have any knowledge of what is happening? Is it related to upload speeds or some synchronisation of the line or something? Any help appreciated.

thanks

I have 40/10 fibre connected through the SKY SR101 Hub. I would like to improve the wireless speed and strength.

Would the addition of a range extender do what I want? Do I need and thing special as my Hub reports my network type is mer.

I have seen the following:
asus EA-N666 N900 gigabit 3-in1 Range Extender
TP-Links TP-WA850RE Universal Wireless N Range Extender
Edimax N300 Range Extender
Netgear DB WiFi Range Extender
Belkin N300 SDB Range Extender

Thanks

Wifi Speeds dropped in last 2 days

Up until 2 days ago, my Wifi speed from my Sky hub SR101 were 1.5-2.0Mbps, Now the wireless speed has dropped to 0.16Mbps.
Have tried this on 3 different devices, an iPhone 5, a 4S and a PC connected by wireless dongle, the speed on the Cat5 connected PC is full 3Mbps.
Even placing the iPhone 5 next to the hub and running a speed test is extremely slow.
Tried everything i can think of including forgetting the network and rediscovering, changing the wireless channel to a less congested one (found with InSSIDer)
Only thing i haven't tried is power-cycling the Hub and don't want to do that as it will drop my connection speed for a few days. Should i just phone Sky and get a new hub?

Sky Box and Wall Mounting Ideas

Hi

I'm looking to get my LCD mounted on the wall with a bracket, to free up some space in our tiny and pokey living room. The only setback is the Sky Digibox will need to have a stand. Can they be mounted on the wall too or am I being too adventurous here? Anyone got any ideas as I think putting the STB on a stand defeats the purpose of having a wall mounted TV

Can I improve my stats?

Port Forwarding SR101

$

Hi Guys,

Ok first off I'm not stupid, thick or anyway none PC thicko but I cannot get ports to open up on the SR101 router for love or money.

What I need is for example:

On my incoming IP address I need it associated to port 8000 and then it gets directed to my local IP address using port 7000.

So

Example: http:// 88.77.66.55:8000 when clicked goes to 192.168.0.50:7000.

I can open ports on there own but I cannot direct incoming ports to internal ports.

Any help on this or can I change the router and keep the modem?

Thanks

Is the port that connects to the Sky Hub on the BT Openreach Modem 10/100 or Gigabit?

I know that it's a bit of a random question but does anyone know if the port on the BT Openreach modem is Gigabit or not?

No real important reason for me wanting to know, I was just wondering and as I haven't been able to find the answer easily it's now starting to bug me!

I'm guessing it's 10/100 but would love a definitive answer. Anyone know?
