I've been using steam for about 8 years & have had no problems with it, I've been using it on my current PC setup since I built it almost a year ago & again i've had zero problems.
With the big sales last week I've been using steam a lot over the last week & since about last Thursday a lot of the time when I start the steam client my router will disconnect from the internet.
I've no problems with anything else with regards to the internet, Its fast & reliable when been used by everything else (Browsers, Torrents, Playstations, Xbox, Sky reciever, Laptops & more), Its only when im logging into the steam network through the client that this seems to happen. I'll get the 'connecting to steam account' dialog box & then after a few seconds my router cuts the internet off.
Once it logs into steam everything is fine, All my games work, I can play online without issue, I can download games/updates at top speed (Around 2 meg/second) its just the initial login through the steam client which seems to cause the issue & as I said its only happening through the steam client which i've uninstalled/reinstalled a couple times to try & solve things.
My ISP is sky (Been with them since they launched there broadband in 2006 & had no issues with there service at all) & my router is the Sky D-link DSL-2640S which I've had for about 2 years (Free upgrade from my old Netgear) & which has worked perfectly in that time & continues to work perfectly for everything else outside of the issue I describe above.
Seems like a really odd issue which im struggling to figure out given how I'm having no problems at all with everything but the initial login via the steam client?

I've done various tests & it definitely seems to be something to do with steam & its doing it on all 3 of the computers/laptops we have in the house including a brand new laptop with a fresh Win7 install.
I've also not used steam for just over a week & my internet has been fast/stable with no issues, I went to log into steam client last night & immediately my internet disconnected, Once reconnected I tried to login again & again during client login my internet disconnected.
I've done all the port forwarding, Played around with the caferate & limited the download speed in the steam client yet no joy.
Its really odd how its only logging in through the steam client which causes this problem, I have no issues at all of any sort when using the internet with everything apart from the steam client & as I say its only while logging into the steam network through the client.
