Question about replacing my Sky Q Hub with an Asus DSL-AC88U

$

I bought the router after reading multiple recommendations that it works with Sky. Unfortunately after an hour of trying I could not get the Internet Connection Wizard to connect me automatically.

DSL is up and showing VDSL2.

I followed an old guide on how to get it working and it still didn't work so I took matters in to my own hands.

I reconnected my old Hub and pulled all the WAN IP settings from it, that would be my WAN IP, Sky's Netmask, Sky's Gateway IP and both of Sky's DNS addresses. Then I went back to the Asus, in WAN Settings I edited the PVC and set the following options

Index
Wan Type - VDSL WAN (PTM)
Connection Type - Static IP

PVC Settings
Enable WAN - Yes
Route - 1
UPNP - Yes

802.1q
Enable - Yes
WLAN ID - 101

WAN IP Settings
IP - The address I pulled from the Sky Hub
Netmask - Pulled from the Sky Hub
Gateway - Pulled from the Sky Hub

DNS
DNS 1 & 2 - Both pulled from the hub and verified as Sky's public DNS

After I hit apply the router connected within 20 seconds and everything is now working.

My worry is that I am forcing a static IP address so if the address changes my router will lose its connection, right?

Is there something I'm missing here, why can't it connect using the wizard but connects fine when I manually specify the information?

Any input would be appreciated.

DSL-AC88U drops WAN connection at 11pm every night.

Its happened for 2 nights on the run now (it's only been in for 2 nights), at almost exactly 11pm the WAN connection drops and it will not reconnect again until I plug the Sky Hub back in, once the Sky hub has reconnected the Asus reconnects again straight away.

I've obviously tried rebooting multiple times and last night I even did a factory reset to try and solve it (which didn't work). When it happened again tonight (40 minutes ago now) all I did was plugged in the Sky hub, let it connect, pulled it out again, replugged the Asus and it went straight back on.

Anyone got any ideas?

If it does it again tomorrow night (and there's no solution) I'm going to return it back to Amazon.

Edit - It dropped again and now it won't go back on at all.

Hey,
New to the site. Looking for some info on how Sky engineers get the kit they install? Is it delivered to their house?

How Many Sky Q Mini Boxes... REALLY

Hi All,

Hopefully someone who's done some testing can educate me as to the REAL limit of Sky Q Mini's that will connect and work with a Sky Q 2Tb box and ideally what the limiting factor is.

I know Sky say its 4, I know they wont sell you more than 4 and I know that to obtain them on the grey market is as bad as stealing a nuns car and using it to mow down kittens.... but I'm interested to understand the real world limitations.

Thanks

Ross :)

Looking to Find Type of Database the SKY + HD uses now in June 2020

Hello:

I was wondering if anyone is willing to reveal what database version (e.g. MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQLite) the SKY + HD box uses. I know there was once upon a time a program that someone had figured it out but I suspect SKY silenced him so, as a result, I can't take the stuff from one HD and copy it to another! I'd like to try (for my own edification, of course).

Thanks in advance for any information.

Well folks it's been a blast, sorta. I've been with Sky ever since they bought out British Satellite Broadcasting. I have had their broadband since it's inception. In my opinion their telly is rubbish and stupidly expensive and most of what Sky broadcast I can get on Freeview, Freesat and the web. I did stop their telly a long time ago but I stayed with the broadband from the start. Unfortunately partly due to a broken promise made by Sky about a free upgrade that was renaged on but mostly because of the price I have now taken a new subscription with Plusnet. To be fair to Sky their broadband, for me, has been faultless. I pay 40 odd quid a month to Sky for 30Mb down and 10 up plus line rental and calls. Plusnet are doing the same package for 26 quid odd a month for 18 months. So I'm off to them. It does go up after the 18 months but there are other providers who want will want my custom. It's been a good Forum although recently it has fallen into, more or less, dissuse. Most of the queries these days are very technical and generally about trying to use different routers because, it seems, that, for a lot of people, the router that Sky provides just does not cut it. I didn't find that in all honesty but then I am purely an entertainment web user. I didn't like the way that Sky tied us to their router but as it all worked I chose not to do anything about it. To replace Sky's router always seemed to be a huge hassle.

Anyway I'm off for now. We shall see how that goes. Thanks for the help you have provided over the years. Byee.

I have been with sky tv for over 14 years. it's been ok the tv is great and probably the main reason I have been so loyal to sky (and to lazy to bother moving). But feel like they are taking advantage of me. I have eventually moved my phone and broadband over to sky due to incentive offers but then the price goes up. So thinking of moving to Now TV which looks ok and cheap! Before I call Sky does anyone know if Sky own Now TV. Don't want to call sky to say I am leaving and going to NowTv as they are less likely to offer me a better deal if they own Now TV.

Also does anyone know if my sky box will still work as a freesat box if I leave sky

Sky WiFi Speed Issues - any help appreciated!

Hi All,

I'm new here and having had a read of teh forum I'm still bewildered by my issue! I'm really hoping you can help me, I love technology but am lacking some of the basic knowledge, which may be why I'm in a mess! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have Sky Broadband superfast and every test i do indicates the speed coming into the house is fine. The problem appears to start once the broadband gets in the house. I have the latest Sky router, a Sky Q silver box and 3 Sky Q minis.

I also have LOADS of wifi connected things such as Sonos (18 sonos products i think), 20+ wifi plugs, weather station, doorbell cameras and chimes plus a myriad of TVs, playstations, ipads and iphones. I'm very aware the sheer number of devices connected to my router is what is causing my problem. However, I'm reluctant to switch any of them off or change the home setup, it all works really well (albeit very slowly!). I think there are c. 60 devices connected at any one time.

We also have outbuildings with TVs and Sonos products in them so range is a bit of an issue too. We have a couple of dead spots in the house and some of the wifi cameras furthest from the router drop out regularly and when they do connect it's very slow.

I thought the answer might be to add some wi-fi boosters (i added 4 Netgear EX6410 boosters) this really helped with the dead spots and meant all the cameras stayed connected. However, I subsequently discovered Sonos didn't like extenders and neither does Sky Q. The speeds when phones etc connected to the booster were incredibly slow and there was lots of drop outs/lost connections as devices transferred from extender to router etc.

I thought it might be best to add a mesh system instead of the extenders (the extenders are all now off again) and after research ordered a Google nest wifi router with 2 satellites (it arrives tomorrow) but i understand this may not actually work with the Sky router and it also causes issues with Sonos (both of which i read after ordering!). I've also got a Netgear Orbi Ultimate system coming, but I have no idea if this will work any better or not.

I've subsequently ordered and ASUS DSL AC68U router which also arrives tomorrow which I was planning to use to replace the sky router, but again i understand it will cause issues with Sky mini boxes possibly and also it doesn't allow the phone to plug in (we have one of Sky's new internet phone numbers.

Any help or advice would be appreciated, I'm at my wits end and I can't take my children complaining anymore about the slow wifi (first world problems, i've told them to be grateful they have internet full stop!)

Thank you so much in advance.

Iain

PS I have Sky broadband boost as well but i have no idea what this does or how it is supposed to help. Generally when i do a speed test we're lucky to get over 8mpbs (yes 8, the line coming in says it's capable of 72mbps).

My Box appears to be developing a Fault since a switched my old Hitachi 720 tv for a 1080 Smart TV from Aldi.I usually put my box in standby at night, but recently when I boot it up,the green light comes on but the Sky TV HDMI is not recognised as the box appears to have crashed? When i remove the mains plug and leave it unplugged for 10 minutes, then plug back in,after a while the green light returns and I can get a picture on the TV.
I have done several EPG defrags of the hard drive, but as soon as I turn it off again, the problem recurs I am wondering if there is a problem with the hard drive.?I have anothe Sky box,its an earlier model that didnt have the Wifi installed in the box and has a wifi box attached externally by usb cable.I dont want to change the box over, unless i have to as I have some programmes recorded on it that I want to watch. But if I do need to change it is there any Tutorial I can read before hand for this procedure and resyncing the Viewing Card..Any help would be appreciated Michael

Additional router for solar batteries.

I have bought myself a battery system for my house that is charged by my solar panels. The battery controller has its own little Wi-fi router in it. The app that will tell me all the stats of my system needs to speak to my sky router to provide me the info on the app. I’ve set up everything that I can but it’s not working. I think the sky router has some sort of security code that I don’t know about or something else.
I don’t know much about these things so bear with me. Please assume that I know very little indeed.

Moving to Sky Q next week. Will I lose my Sky+ Box?

$

Hello all,

Not sure if this is the correct sub-board to post this on, so moderator please feel free to move it if required.

So I am getting an upgrade to Sky Q shortly, and I currently have Sky+ and I have had it for around 6.5 years. I have hundreds of recordings on this box and I do not want to lose them. I have done the following:

1. Removed the hard disk and attached it to my PC.
2. Used the Extract+ software to copy some of the drive's recordings to my PC.
3. I also tried the ExPVR software, as I wasn't happy with the way that Extract+ exported the files as .STR format. It took a long time to find a player that support this extension.

Both of the software applications are out-of-date and not performing as well as I imagined. Some of the recordings cannot be ripped at all (this is due to encryption I imagine) and some of the recordings are not properly copying and are exporting as 14+ hour clips when they are only 30 minutes, and thus the file sizes are excessive. In other words, it's just a massive pain in the backside, I'd much rather plug it back into the TV and just watch the shows that way.

Now my questions are:

1. Will the Sky engineer visiting my house to install Sky Q want to take my Sky+ box away? I was under the impression that I own the hardware, can I tell him that I want to keep it?
2. If I do keep the Sky+ box, is it possible to connect it up again to the TV when I want and access my recordings in the planner?

I don't really know how the whole thing works. Is it dependent on the subscription i.e. if I have Sky Q will it even work if I attach my old Sky+ box to access the old planner?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Cancelling TV element of Sky package...

I have left it a little late to get a response from this Community, but thought I would give it a go...

I am intending to cancel the TV element of my Sky package - keeping Phone & Bb - tomorrow, which is 30 days before the current contract ends (standard notice period for Sky), for a number of reasons. My questions (which I will try to get answered by the CS Agent when I call tomorrow) are:

1. When I cancel the TV service, will I still have access to the Recorded & Downloaded programmes already on my Sky+HD 'box'?

2. Will I still be able to receive the terrestrial (BBC, ITV, Ch4, Ch5 & their respective HD) & 'Free-to-Air' TV channels through the Sky 'box'?
I have a 'digital' TV, so this is not too much of an issue as I can swap to the in-built tuner for these channels. TIA.

I figured out that IPoE may be the way forward and found old ZyXEL VMG3925-B10B.

Here is my settings for IPoE [in brackets is selected option]:

But option 61 has 2 choices IAID and DUID.

When I attempt to populate and save the fields I get the following errors:
DHCP Option 61 IAID must be 8 hexadecimal digits.
DHCP Option 61 DUID must be hexadecimal digits.

So can someone confirm what format should I use?

I have found interesting webpage explaining things bit more:
https://www.draytek.co.uk/support/gu...re-setup-guide

8 hexadeximal digits must be the password
but if I try to fill in the DUID with 7c4ca5123456@skydsl I get the error.

Does anyone know what format should the DUID be?

And what is the "option 125"?

I know it's not needed on VDSL, but I am curious what are the data in the string

mine was this:
2.04.1919.R|003|ER115|B23456789012347

2.04.1919.R| firmware version, I am now on 2.12.2653.R on the same device

ER115| model
B23456789012347|serial number - on the sky box/packaging label the serial number is B2345678901234 without the "7" at the end, maybe a control digit ...

Sky hub and mesh network problems......

$

There is quite a lot about this on the internet and so it appears that sky may be a bit behind the times. Mesh networks are bcoming more and more popular, I tried one and it improved the internet in my home greatly. The problem is Sky is a bit of a block to perfect mesh because of it's archaic practice regarding its modem/router setup.
Put simply, it does not allow the hub to be set up in bridge mode so that the hub acts as the modem and the mesh system acts as the router. Yes, you can put the mesh into bridge mode and turn off the hub's wifi, but in doing so you lose most of the useful features of the mesh system. The deal situation is to use the mesh as the router and the hub as a modem. It follows that Sky could simply fix my problem by allowing bridge mode, they can give excuses but there is no really good reason they shouldn't.
A second solution would be to allow a third party moden and router setup, but again Sky are not really helpful here as it is not straight forward to just connect your own equipment. Sky did not origianlly allow this anyway but i have read that since earlier this year they do. However Sky are really unhelpful in giving the information you need to do it, I phoned them up and they didn't have a clue, Kept giving me the password to get onto the settings web interface, which i explained i knew but wasn't what i meant by how do i get the information to connect my own modem and router. They eventually said it couldn't be done, despite it saying on the forums it could.
Any way here i am, sorry for the rant, i'm not too happy with Sky. Like i said, ideally Sky would just let me use their hub and put it into bridge mode. Failing this does anyone know how i can use a different modem with my mesh system as the router?
I also have my old BT openreach modem which i got from sky before they made the hub work without one. Can i just plug this in and then add any router i want? I have tried it and all of the lights go green but i cannot get the mesh router to work, I read to put it in PPPoE mode but it asks for username and password, which the Sky person on the phone did not understand. If the openreach modem connects to the Sky network then i assume it is doing the correct handshake and i should be able to use any router, does anyone have any comments or advice?
Thank you for sticking with me if you have got this far.

Engineer managed to connect Sky Q to my network without info

$

Just had Sky Q activated in new house after a house move. The Sky Q box is somehow connected to my home wifi network, without me telling him credentials... He also didn't have access to the router as was in another room where I was sat during the install so he didnt touch that. The only possible thing I could think of is that the router is always searching for a Q box and always allows it access to a network, but that would open a security hole.

Can anyone shed any light on this?
