Disconnects affecting speed

$

I've relocated my router, previously it was plugged in to the master socket with the supplied lead/microfilter. Whilst I was re-arranging things the router was disconnected and re-connected several times.

This has caused connection speed to drop from 37mb to 29mb. I've just tried connecting every as it was and it won't go higher than 29mb.

If I use the new setup (mk3 faceplate & RJ45 -> RJ11 cable) the stats are exactly the same.

Should I put a support call in to Sky to ask for any faults to be cleared or even re-start DLM ? or will the line eventually recover on its own ?

Current stats:
Edit: Download 29mb, Upload 8.7mb (were 37mb / 9.4mb )
Attenuation 19.8db (previously the same)
Noise 8.3db / 6.6db (previous 6.3 / 6.6)

Anybody have a Sky dish on a tripod outside - garden, veranda etc?

I asked on another thread about options for Sky in a rental house and had some help but thought it was worth asking a direct question. We're having to move to rented house for 3-6 months due to structural problems with our house. We would like to have Sky Q if possible (probably go for Now TV if not). The landlord has said he would be happy for us to have a Sky dish but would want us to remove it and make good when we leave. While that may be possible, it started me looking at a solution that wouldn't involve any damage such as a dish on a tripod in the garden such as these at https://www.digitalisdirect.com/prod...ent/dish-sets/

Was hoping to hear from anyone who had experience of using these please?

Packet loss when ethernet connected

$

Hi all,

I'm having problems for the last week with massive packet loss (40%) when connecting to the internet via my Sky router, but apparently only when the ethernet port is connected.

My current setup is:
  • Sky Broadband (non-fibre)
  • Connected via Sky Q Hub ER110
  • Assorted wireless devices
  • Ethernet port connected to a 4 port Netgear gigabit switch
  • Desktop / server / media centre connected via gigabit ethernet to the switch

And the symptoms I've been seeing the last week are:
  • Typically packet loss in the 40% range when pinging any internet address (IPv4 or IPv6)
  • All networking within the house working fine.

What I've found today after repeated testing is:
  • On router reboot, usually everything is working fine. The typical ping time to Google is 57ms.
  • After 30 minutes or so, if the ethernet is plugged in, packet loss begins. Starting at a few percent, building up to around 40% after the router has been running for an hour or so.
  • If the ethernet cable is left unplugged, the connection seems to stay OK.
  • Right now, it's been running a few hours with ethernet plugged in. If I unplug ethernet, then from a wireless connection, the connection returns to 0% packet loss in a few seconds. If I plug in the ethernet again, I quickly start getting 40% packet loss (within say 30 seconds).

Any ideas on how to resolve this or investigate further?

Thanks

Andy

High cost of contract

Hi all,
I currently pay over £80 a month for SKY+, variety + HDPack, line rental + fibre unlimited which tbh is ridiculous. I've been out of contract for some time and would like to know what my options are. I spoke to one of the shopping centre stall salesmen who said that Sky expect people to phone when they're out of contract to negotiate new deals. I was working out that just by moving broadband & line rental to elsewhere I would be saving a minimum of £18 a month. If I phone sky to ask for their best deals as an existing customer are they just going to laugh at me as I'm already a customer? I would like to get skyq and unlimited fiber but dont want to be paying anywhere near why I am now. Advice would be welcomed!
Thanks

Powell’s comments about the strengthening economy etc suggest he may be thinking of more than three rate rises this year, and the foreign exchange market thinks so, with the dollar gaining ground as he speaks.

US bond yields are also rising, on the expectation of further interest rate rises.

Carolyn Maloney asks, what would cause you to raise rates more than three times this year?

Powell says at the December meeting, the median projection was three rises. There will be another projection in three weeks at teh next meeting, but since [December] we have seen an increasing strengthening of the economy, inflation is moving to target, there is growth around the globe and fiscal policy has been more accommodative.

He says, We will be reviewing our projections, [for the next meeting] and I would not want to prejudge it.

Maloney asks, has the outlook changed in light of the tax reforms and the budget agreement?

Powell says, my personal outlook has changed since December, we’ll be taking into account everything that’s happened since December.

Republican Andy Barr says we have seen a wave of bonuses since tax cuts were announced, and will this increase wages?

Powell says it is hard to trace through the effects of tax cuts on wages. Lower taxes should lead to higher investment, which should lead to higher productivity, which should lead to higher wages over time.

Asked about risks of the unconventional monetary policy, Powell plays this down.

He says the financial sector shows modest risk. There are some high asset prices, but no buildup of leverage among households.

Sky and Netflix announce a new partnership to bundle the full Netflix service into a brand new Sky TV subscription pack. This pioneering partnership, the first of its kind, will give millions of Sky customers seamless access to Netflix through the Sky Q platform.

Sky will make available the extensive Netflix service to new and existing customers by creating a brand-new and attractively priced entertainment TV pack, combining Sky and Netflix content side- by-side for the first time. Netflix's service includes over a thousand hours of Ultra HD content, complementing Sky Q's extensive UHD programming.

With the Netflix app integrated into Sky Q, and Netflix programmes promoted alongside Sky content, customers can enjoy shows such as Britannia, Billions and Big Little Lies alongside The Crown, Stranger Things and Black Mirror, as well as free-to-air TV, all on the Sky platform. At the same time, customers will enjoy the simplicity of one monthly bill and easy to use, integrated user interface.

As part of the new partnership, Sky customers will be able to seamlessly access Netflix content in the Sky Q menu, plus quickly find their favourite Netflix programmes including the use of Sky Q's search and voice search functionality. Existing Netflix customers will be able to easily migrate their account to the new Sky TV bundle, or sign into the Netflix app using their existing account details, to enjoy Netflix with even greater convenience.

This agreement will give customers an even broader and better range of content, therefore adding more value into a Sky subscription. It builds on the raft of new innovations coming to Sky Q which were announced earlier this week (see separate press release here for further details).

Jeremy Darroch, Group Chief Executive, Sky commented:
"The exciting new features coming to Sky Q will enable Sky customers to access even more of the best entertainment delivered over the best product platform. By placing Sky and Netflix content side-by-side, along with programmes from the likes of HBO, Showtime, Fox and Disney, we are making the entertainment experience even easier and simpler for our customers. Our recent announcements mean we will extend our leadership in delivering customers the best viewing and user experience in Europe."

Reed Hastings, Chief Executive, Netflix:
"We are delighted to partner with Sky to bring the latest technologies and great stories under the same roof. With this innovative new partnership and Netflix's stellar line up of original content from across the world, Sky's customers will be able to seamlessly access and enjoy all the best entertainment in one place."

This European partnership will see Netflix - along with the new Sky TV pack - launch on Sky Q in the UK and Ireland in the coming year. Netflix will launch on Sky Q platforms in Germany, Austria and Italy thereafter.

The agreement with Netflix also extends to Sky's contract free streaming services. In the UK and Ireland, Sky will launch Netflix as a standalone app on NOW TV's family of streaming devices including on the recently launched NOW TV Smart Stick. Sky Ticket in Germany and Austria, and NOW TV in Italy, will launch a standalone app on their devices in due course.

I have set up my Sky HD box to an old sat dish and it works fine for the free channels but would like to be able to record channels so thought I would buy the entertainment channels. I live with my son and he is already a Sky customer and just upgraded to Sky Q. I really don’t like the new set up my son has spent a lot of time trying to show me how it works and find the old Sky box easier to use. Does anyone know if Sky would allow me to have my own account? Thanks for any advice. Alan.

Had a welcome call from Sky, but very surprised to be asked for my password, and that a Sky representative would have access to my password.

Passwords should not be stored, and companies should not ask for them in full... otherwise customers get in the habit for divulging it to unknown cold callers.

At the very least, should be asked for only 3 characters from a password, or a PIN.

Sir Bradley Wiggins & Team Sky ‘crossed ethical line’ - doping in sport report

Sir Bradley Wiggins & Team Sky ?crossed ethical line? - doping in sport report - BBC Sport
Quote:

Sir Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky "crossed an ethical line" by using drugs allowed under anti-doping rules to enhance performance instead of just for medical need, a report by MPs says.

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee said it is "not in a position" to state what was in the 'jiffy bag' delivered to Wiggins at the 2011 Criterium du Dauphine.

But it added there is no "reliable evidence" to back up Team Sky's claim the medical package contained a legal decongestant.

The report also said Team Sky used the anti-inflammatory drug triamcinolone to prepare Britain's most decorated Olympian for the Tour de France, which Wiggins won in 2012.

A UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) investigation that closed in November was unable to establish if Wiggins had received a decongestant or, as alleged, triamcinolone, which is banned in competition.

If Wiggins was injected with triamcinolone on the final day of the 2011 Dauphine it would be an anti-doping violation, with the maximum sanction a two-year ban and the loss of results.

"Drugs were being used by Team Sky, within World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) rules, to enhance the performance of riders and not just to treat medical need," the DCMS committee report added.

Team Sky said it "strongly refutes" the report's "serious claim that medication has been used by the team to enhance performance".
Wiggins said in a statement: "I find it so sad that accusations can be made, where people can be accused of things they have never done, which are then regarded as facts.

"I strongly refute the claim that any drug was used without medical need."

Triamcinolone is banned in competition under Wada rules, unless the athlete has a therapeutic use exemption (TUE), but is permitted out of competition.

Wiggins, 37, was granted TUEs to take the corticosteroid, which can treat allergies and respiratory issues, shortly before the 2011 Tour de France, his 2012 Tour win and the 2013 Giro d'Italia.

While the report said this "does not constitute a violation of the Wada code", it claims it "does cross the ethical line" set out by Team Sky principal and founder Sir Dave Brailsford, who the report calls on to "take responsibility for these failures".

Regarding Wiggins' use of triamcinolone, former Team Sky and British Cycling coach Shane Sutton told the committee "what Brad was doing was unethical but not against the rules".

The long-awaited "Combatting Doping in Sport" report, also states Lord Coe, the president of athletics' world governing body the IAAF, gave "misleading answers" in evidence about his knowledge of doping allegations in Russian athletics, before they were made in a German television documentary in 2014.

The DCMS committee was also "shocked" that British four-time Olympic champion athlete Sir Mo Farah received an injection of the legal supplement L-carnitine before the 2014 London Marathon that was not recorded on Farah's medical records.

On cycling, Wiggins and Team Sky, the report also states:

  • The TUE system is open to abuse despite welcome reforms by Wada.
  • Wada should introduce a complete ban on corticosteroids such as triamcinolone.
  • Concern at the use of painkiller Tramadol by Team Sky and others and asks Wada to consider banning it.
  • The Ukad investigation into the mystery package was made harder by British Cycling and Team Sky's failure to keep proper records.
  • As a result, UK Sport should determine an amount of compensation due to Ukad from British Cycling and Team Sky to cover the costs of the investigation.
  • Brailsford must take responsibility for "the damaging scepticism about the legitimacy of his team's performance and accomplishments".

The 'jiffy-bag' mystery

Former British Cycling and Team Sky doctor Richard Freeman received a 'mystery package' for Wiggins on 12 June 2011 - the final day of the Criterium du Dauphine in France, an event Wiggins won.

At the request of Freeman, Sutton arranged for then British Cycling coach Simon Cope to bring the package - he claims left for him in a sealed 'jiffy-bag' - out to La Toussuire for the end of the race.

Both Cope and Sutton deny knowing what was in the package, although Sutton told the committee he believes Freeman did administer the substance in it to Wiggins after the race, adding that Freeman had told him: "Brad's been sorted."

Ukad started an investigation into the contents of the package in September 2016, following an allegation, also seen by the DCMS committee, that it contained triamcinolone,

As the DCMS report states, if Wiggins was treated with triamcinolone on 12 June 2011 without a TUE, it would be an anti-doping rule violation. The maximum penalty for such a violation is a two-year ban and the loss of results. Wiggins won the Tour and time trial gold at the London Olympics in 2012.

Although triamcinolone is not prohibited out of competition, under the anti-doping rules of cycling's world governing body the UCI a rider is still considered in competition until midnight on the day an event ends.

In December 2016, Brailsford told a DCMS hearing that Freeman had told him it contained "fluimucil for a nebuliser". Fluimucil is a legal decongestant used to clear mucus.

Ukad brought no charges after concluding its investigation in November 2017 but said it had been "unable" to prove the package contained fluimucil.

The DCMS committee report also said it had "no verifiable evidence" the package contained fluimucil, after Freeman - "the only reported source of this information" - refused to confirm its contents to the committee, citing legal advice.

Yet the committee could not say it was triamcinolone, criticising Team Sky and British Cycling for a "serious failure" in lacking records of the medication sent.
"Such failure was unprofessional and inexcusable, and that failure is responsible for the damaging cloud of doubt which continues to hang over this matter," it added.

In reply, Team Sky said: "We take full responsibility for mistakes that were made. We wrote to the committee in March 2017 setting out in detail the steps we took in subsequent years to put them right, including, for example, the strengthening of our medical record keeping."

In a letter revealed by the BBC in January
, Ukad claimed its investigation had been "hindered" and may have even been "potentially compromised" by British Cycling's failure to report doping allegations sooner.

The body criticised the "lack of accurate medical records" held by British Cycling. Freeman kept Wiggins' medical records on a laptop that was stolen while he was on holiday in Greece in 2014, and no back-up copy was made.

Freeman submitted written evidence for the report but was too unwell to appear at a DCMS hearing, before resigning from British Cycling in October because of ill health.

In a statement, British Cycling CEO Julie Harrington said the organisation had "implemented new procedures to ensure that we operate to the highest standards" and that there was no longer "blurred boundaries" between itself and Team Sky.

She added: "Never again will we allow a situation to develop whereby our independence as the national governing body is called into question because of our relationship with a professional team."

Performance enhancement or medical need?

After Russian hackers Fancy Bears released details of Wiggins' TUEs in September 2016, he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show he took triamcinolone to "put himself back on a level playing field".

Wiggins said he is "a lifelong sufferer of asthma" and used it to treat allergies and respiratory problems and not to gain an "unfair advantage".

The DCMS report said it received "confidential material from a well-placed and respected source" about Team Sky's medical policy between 2011 and 2013 that states Wiggins and a smaller group of riders trained separately from the rest of the team in preparation for the 2012 season.

"The source said they were all using corticosteroids out of competition to lean down in preparation for the major races that season," the report said.
"This same source also states that Bradley Wiggins was using these drugs beyond the requirement for any TUE."

The report concludes that Team Sky were using the "powerful corticosteroid" triamcinolone to prepare Wiggins and "possibly others riding supporting him" for the Tour de France.

It added: "The purpose of this was not to treat medical need, but to improve his power-to-weight ratio ahead of the race."

Wiggins was granted a TUE on 26 June 2012, four days before the start of the Tour.

"The application for the TUE... also meant he benefited from the performance-enhancing properties of this drug during the race," the report said.

Team Sky said it "strongly refutes" the allegation the use of triamcinolone was widespread before the 2012 Tour.

"We are surprised and disappointed that the committee has chosen to present an anonymous and potentially malicious claim in this way, without presenting any evidence or giving us an opportunity to respond," it added.

"This is unfair both to the team and to the riders in question."

IPv6 address not being picked up by Archer vr900v2

Hi everyone first real post.

It already is the latest firmware.

Best Access Point with VPN functionality to add to SR102?

$

Hello Everyone.

I have never really liked the SR102 that I have with my Sky Fibre, but lived with it so far. But more recently the WiFi performance has been very patchy, with multiple devices regularly dropping connections and unable to reconnect etc.

In addition to that I have now a need to use VPN for some Web activities, and as I am unable to use VPN on those devices (TV's) directly I will need to add that functionality via the Router.

So for ease of setup I was thinking about keeping the existing Sky Hub SR102 as the modem/ethernet device and to disable Wifi on it, and to connect a new Router solely as a WiFi Access point.

Which Router/Access point would people recommend for this kind of setup, or should I rather consider a full replacement of the Sky Hub?

Only two requirements are:

- Has to provide daster and more reliable WiFi then the Sky Hub (shouldn't be too difficult)
- Router needs to be able to run a VPN, ideally one that lets you configure which of the connected devices use the VPN and which are not.

I have no set budget, but would like to stay around the £100 - £150 mark. Seems the ASUS devices are favored by many and would do what I want it to do, but there are so many different Versions that I am not sure which one would be best suited, and which ones might be overkill.

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks,
dsab

Sky’s new virtual reality experience, Hold the World, is to launch this spring, offering the unique opportunity of a one-on-one audience with the world’s foremost natural history broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough.

The ground-breaking interactive experience instantly transports the viewer from the comfort of their own home to London’s Natural History Museum, where they can get their hands on rare specimens from its world-famous collection as they go behind the scenes to explore areas usually closed to the public.

Sir David, who was filmed by more than 100 cameras and digitally recreated as an incredibly lifelike 3D hologram for the experience, acts as a private guide, imparting his expert knowledge on a series of rare artefacts and objects from the museum’s collection, including a blue whale, a stegosaurus, a trilobite, a dragonfly, a butterfly and a pterosaur.

People will be able to look at these ancient and delicate objects in a level of detail that has only been made possible through the technology of VR. They can virtually pick up, hold, enlarge and expand the rare objects, giving them unparalleled access to explore and understand some of the world’s rarest natural history specimens.

Sir David Attenborough said:
”Sharing my passion for the natural world is something I have done for many years through different technologies, from the days of black-and-white TV to colour, HD, 3D, 4K and now virtual reality. Hold the World is an extraordinary next step in how we can communicate and educate people about experiences they wouldn’t usually have access to in the real world. I am delighted about what users can learn and discover from the Natural History Museum’s treasures in this new VR experience - it really is one of the most convincing and bewitching experiences that the world of technology has yet produced.”

Hold the World marks the next phase in Sky’s VR development, as it is the first fully interactive production from Sky, using a combination of interactive video game and TV documentary technology. It will be available to Sky customers this spring when the Sky VR app relaunches as part of our customer loyalty programme, Sky VIP.

The experience lasts between 20 minutes and an hour, giving participants complete control over their journey. When entering, viewers can choose from a number of locations in the museum, such as the Conservation Centre, the Earth Sciences Library and the Cryptogamic Herbarium. In each of the locations, Sir David sits opposite the participant and invites them to examine and ‘handle’ several rare specimens. And in a series of ‘magic moments’, the objects also come ‘to life’, giving users a chance to learn more about the history and science behind them.

Commissioned by the Sky VR Studio, Hold the World was produced by immersive content studio Factory 42, in association with Dream Reality Interactive and Talesmith and through collaboration with the Natural History Museum’s digital team. Creature animation was produced by The Mill. The experience was directed by Dan Smith (Factory 42), and executive produced by John Cassy (Factory 42) and Neil Graham (Sky).

Hold the World was created using a variety of new technologies, combining them in a landmark way that has never previously been attempted. Photogrammetry was used to recreate the museum itself, whilst Sir David’s likeness as a hologram was created with more than 100 cameras using volumetric capture. The museum’s world-renowned CT scanning department then worked with museum scientists and animation teams to create a scientifically accurate model and animation for each specimen.

Gary Davey, Sky’s MD of content, said:
“Sky is all about combining innovative technology with world-class entertainment and Hold the World is the epitome of this. It gives people unprecedented access to precious objects and specimens from the phenomenal blue whale to the impressive stegosaurus, with leading nature expert Sir David Attenborough as their guide - a ground-breaking, out-of-this-world experience and a new way we can all engage and learn from the world around us.”

John Cassy, Factory 42 CEO and executive producer of Hold the World, commented:
“Having the opportunity to create a unique interactive experience with Sir David Attenborough - no less – has been a privilege. Sky has always had an impressive commitment to innovation and we hope Hold the World gives their customers a priceless opportunity – the chance to have a one-on-one tutorial about the natural world from Sir David himself!”

Hold the World’s factual content was led by the Natural History Museum‘s scientists, whose unparalleled knowledge means it includes the latest, most accurate and fascinating facts about the specimens featured.

Professor Paul Barrett, a Natural History Museum dinosaur expert who worked on the stegosaurus model and animation, said:
“Virtual reality is a really important new tool for getting our specimens out there and letting the public see them really up close and manipulate them. It's the first time people will actually be able to hold these objects, pull them around and make them larger and smaller. It’s been a really exciting development for us here, because we are also seeing it in new ways for the first time too.”

The relaunch of the Sky VR app will also see a new piece of VR content released each month. Highlights to come include:

  • Bringing football fans closer to the action in places they don’t normally have access to.
  • Photorealistic 3D holograms of Anthony Joshua in action, allowing viewers to experience like never before what it’s like to come face to face with the world champion.
  • A great range of Sky Original Production scripted content, from the opportunity to delve behind the scenes of Britannia, to a fully narrative story for the smash-hit Italian drama Gomorrah, which was especially written for VR.

Hold The World launches this spring. The VR experience is available within the Sky VR app on Google Daydream View, Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift. Sky customers can download the Sky VR app via Google Play for Google Daydream View or if they’re using a Samsung Gear VR or Oculus Rift headset, from the Oculus store. Hold The World will also be available as a standalone app on Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality for a limited time, ahead of the full Sky VR app launching on the platform later this year.

Snow Storm over the UK

Ok, it's been and gone now. Apparently, there's another set of storms due tomorrow, but that appears to be lots of thunder and lightning.

I set up a camera to show some timelapse. I wasn't expecting lots of deep snow, but where I placed the camera I was able to get a good view of the snow falling and clearing up over a few days. I was able to record and render it in 4K, so if you have the facilities do watch it on a 4K UHD TV or monitor.
