Line Attenuation gone up?

$
0

First picture (18 or so hours up time) is showing 13.9dB for line attenuation, but the second pic (after the ER110 re-booted) is showing 23dB!? also the speed has, as you'd expect, gone down.
Nothing has changed here..hub hasn't been moved, no cables touched etc. So why would the attenuation jump up like that?

I'm going to try plugging the hub into the test socket, maybe the lead from the faceplate to the hub has got damaged?! but it'll have to wait until Sunday.

Sky has today announced the launch of ‘Women in Home Service’, a paid training programme for female engineers that will offer career and development opportunities for up to 1,000 women interested in a becoming an engineer at Sky.

There are currently less women working in engineering in the UK than anywhere else in Europe [1] with lack of skills and experience being a significant barrier to women pursuing a career in the field. At present, just 2% of the engineering workforce at Sky are female. However, we’re committed to creating an inclusive culture right across our business and over the next two years we aim to increase representation of female engineers to 20%.

Over £2 million will be invested in the programme which will provide hands on and classroom based learning. The focus will be on providing the necessary skills to become an engineer at Sky, plus provide training on workplace confidence, along with customer service and sales skills. At the end of the course each woman will receive a City and Guilds qualification.

Each of the women taking part in the scheme will have their own mentor throughout the programme, who themselves will receive specialist training on how best to give the right level of support and advice.

Chris Stylianou, Chief Operating Officer commented
: ‘Engineering is an industry that has long seen underrepresentation of women. That is an issue for society and one that we at Sky have a responsibility to address. It is important that our Home Service engineers are as diverse and inclusive as the customers and communities they serve and that’s why we’re focussing our efforts on increasing the number of female engineers at Sky over the next two years.”

The launch of this programme is part of Sky’s wider inclusion commitments to address gender imbalance within the business. For example through our wider ‘Women in Tech’ scheme we run a number of initiatives aimed at increasing the number of women in science and technology roles. These initiatives include our Software Academy where 47% of the intake last year was female. We also run an award winning initiative called Get into Tech which provides women the chance to take a free course that will teach them essential coding skills. In the first year since launch over 600 women have applied for the scheme .

Comedy legend Sir Ken Dodd dies, aged 90 - BBC News

Sir Ken Dodd, creator of the Diddy Men and one of the most popular comedians of his time, has died aged 90.

The Liverpool legend had recently been released from hospital after six weeks of treatment for a chest infection.

On Friday, he had married Anne Jones, his partner of 40 years, at their house,
the same one he grew up in, in the Liverpool suburb of Knotty Ash.

"To my mind, he was one of the last music hall greats," his publicist, Robert Holmes, said.

Sir Ken was famous for his very long stand-up shows - with which he was touring until last year - along with his Diddy Men
and the tickling stick.

"He passed away in the home that he was born in over 90 years ago. He's never lived anywhere else.
It's absolutely amazing."

Sir Ken had been a comedian since 1954 and was born the son of a coal merchant in 1927.

In the 1960s, he made it into the Guinness Book of Records for telling 1,500 jokes in three and a half hours.

I have been with sky for many years & feel have been taken for granted. Final straw was e mail from sky saying prices going up on 1 april. Currently have sky+ variety tv (£32) anytime talk & unlimited broadband with total cost already over £70 before increase.I have thought of cancelling variety tv, does this mean i can watch tv channels on freeview & can i save/playback tv via box. Am total useless when it come to technology so any advice welcome. Any ideas on my options would be most welcome but would like to keep skybroadband. Also am not in a virgin wired area

How do I switch to a new package from a legacy one

I currently have Box sets with HD and Sky Q Multiscreen.

From 1st April 2018 this will cost me:
Box sets with HD £39.50
Sky Q Multiscreen £12.00
TOTAL = £51.50 / month

If I go to the Sky website without logging in the equivalent new packages are:
Sky Entertainment £25 (ignoring discount for new customers)
Box Sets £5
HD £5
Sky Q Multiscreen £12
TOTAL = £ 47.00

I have had Sky Q since August 2016 and so am probably at the end of my contract (assuming that it was 18 months).

How do I switch to the new packages?
This doesn't seem to be possible when I am signed into My Sky.

Sky FIBRE unlimited in Ireland with own router

Hi all,

I am a little bit lost, to much information and some of it is different than others.

I am living in Ireland, and have Sky Fibre unlimited with the ER110 modem/router.

  • some sites tell me to extract the username and password through packet capture (which I have done)
  • some sites tell me to use option 60 / 61 to connect..

So, I have a Netgear D6400, which is supported as I understand by dd wrt.

I have tried yesterday night all night to get it working, with different settings using VDSL and ADSL2 and ADSL2+ but to no avail.

Can someone advise me what to do..

The reason I need to install my own router is for the following:
  1. I need to setup a VPN connection as I am starting my own company, and currently doing so from home
  2. ports are blocked by sky, and I need to have certain ports forwarded in order to start providing services to my customers
  3. Sky hardware is not the most easy to work with, and everything is blocked.

Any help is so much appreciated!

Best regards,
Michael

At present my set up is Samsung UHK tv, Sky HD box & Samsung DVD player but am changing to SKY Q on the 25th March.

Presently my sound bar is connected via the HDMI out port on the dvd player & HDMI in port on the tv, & it switches on with the tv & works in a loop through mode with both DVD or sky. I intend to remove the dvd player from the system when SKY Q is installed so my question is if I plug my soundbar into the rear of the new sky q box will it still work when I switch on sky & tv.

Secondly is the sky engineer likely to help in setting up the system if I ask, please please please sort of thing

thank you for any repsonses

Sky Fibre router recommendations

Good Evening,

Been looking through the Known Working Third Party routers thread, helpful but been getting myself lost there.

I am waiting to place the actual broadband order until Sky Q TV gets installed, as apparently this needs to complete before ordering FTTC fibre broadband.

So I'm looking to get one of the following (based on which one is the easiest and less complicated to set up, reliable and whether they will actually work on Sky Fibre 76mb).

- Netgear NightHawk D7000 (Amazon)
- Netgear D6400 (Amazon)
- TP Link AC1600/AC1900 (Amazon) which will be better out of the two?
- Asus DSL-AC56U or DSL-AC68U which will be better out of the two?

Looking to buy from Amazon in case of it not working, I can easily send back.

I would be wanting the router to be combined so no need for an external modem (enough cables already :D). Whilst setting up, is it still needed to extract the Sky username/password via WireShark from my Q Hub. If so, can this be done on Mac?

Many thanks, greatly appreciated,
NE.

Best Wireless Bridge with Sky Q (for wired devices)

I have been wasting hours trying to reconfigure my Buffalo Airstation WHR-G300N V2 after I had to reset it (as I couldn't login to it). I have 3 devices (Smart TV/Blu Ray player/Xbox) in different room to my hub that don't have inbuilt WiFi and require a wired connection. The Airstation was previously all working fine (in Bridging mode) when wirelessly connecting to my Sky Hub SR101. I don't want to waste any more hours on it as I'm not a networking expert.

I currently have Multi-room Sky HD but have ordered Sky Q for install this Saturday. I am receiving the Sky Q Hub today.

For my devices requiring wired connection (which will be located next to the Sky Q Mini box), what would be the best/easiest option...
Do I order up a Sky Q Wireless Booster and connect a 4 port switch to its Ethernet port?
Or is there something else that would do the bridging job with minimal configuration?

Andrew

Dolby Labs Sues Adobe For Copyright Infringement

Quote:

For 15 years, Dolby supplied encoding and decoding technologies for use in Adobe products including Audition, After Effects, Lightroom and Premiere Pro. The licensing agreement between the companies allowed Adobe to self-report usage, on the condition that Dolby could carry out an audit. However, after the software company failed to comply in recent years, Dolby has rolled out the lawyers.Adobe has some of the most recognized software products on the market today, including Photoshop which has become a household name.

While the company has been subjected to more than its fair share of piracy over the years, a new lawsuit accuses the software giant itself of infringement.

Dolby Laboratories is best known as a company specializing in noise reduction and audio encoding and compression technologies. Its reversed double ‘D’ logo is widely recognized after appearing on millions of home hi-fi systems and film end credits.

In a complaint filed this week at a federal court in California, Dolby Labs alleges that after supplying its products to Adobe for 15 years, the latter has failed to live up to its licensing obligations and is guilty of copyright infringement and breach of contract.

“Between 2002 and 2017, Adobe designed and sold its audio-video content creation and editing software with Dolby’s industry-leading audio processing technologies,” Dolby’s complaint reads.

“The basic terms of Adobe’s licenses for products containing Dolby technologies are clear; when Adobe granted its customer a license to any Adobe product that contained Dolby technology, Adobe was contractually obligated to report the sale to Dolby and pay the agreed-upon royalty.”

Dolby says that Adobe promised it wouldn’t sell its any of its products (such as Audition, After Effects, Encore, Lightroom, and Premiere Pro) outside the scope of its licenses with Dolby. Those licenses included clauses which grant Dolby the right to inspect Adobe’s records through a third-party audit, in order to verify the accuracy of Adobe’s sales reporting and associated payment of royalties.

Over the past several years, however, things didn’t go to plan. The lawsuit claims that when Dolby tried to audit Adobe’s books, Adobe refused to “engage in even basic auditing and information sharing practices,” a rather ironic situation given the demands that Adobe places on its own licensees.

Dolby’s assessment is that Adobe spent years withholding this information in an effort to hide the full scale of its non-compliance.

“The limited information that Dolby has reviewed to-date demonstrates that Adobe included Dolby technologies in numerous Adobe software products and collections of products, but refused to report each sale or pay the agreed-upon royalties owed to Dolby,” the lawsuit claims.

Due to the lack of information in Dolby’s possession, the company says it cannot determine the full scope of Adobe’s infringement. However, Dolby accuses Adobe of multiple breaches including bundling licensed products together but only reporting one sale, selling multiple products to one customer but only paying a single license, failing to pay licenses on product upgrades, and even selling products containing Dolby technology without paying a license at all.

Dolby entered into licensing agreements with Adobe in 2003, 2012 and 2013, with each agreement detailing payment of royalties by Adobe to Dolby for each product licensed to Adobe’s customers containing Dolby technology. In the early days when the relationship between the companies first began, Adobe sold either a physical product in “shrink-wrap” form or downloads from its website, a position which made reporting very easy.

In late 2011, however, Adobe began its transition to offering its Creative Cloud (SaaS model) under which customers purchase a subscription to access Adobe software, some of which contains Dolby technology. Depending on how much the customer pays, users can select up to thirty Adobe products. At this point, things appear to have become much more complex.

On January 15, 2015, Dolby tried to inspect Adobe’s books for the period 2012-2014 via a third-party auditing firm. But, according to Dolby, over the next three years “Adobe employed various tactics to frustrate Dolby’s right to audit Adobe’s inclusion of Dolby Technologies in Adobe’s products.”

Dolby points out that under Adobe’s own licensing conditions, businesses must allow Adobe’s auditors to allow the company to inspect their records on seven days’ notice to confirm they are not in breach of Adobe licensing terms. Any discovered shortfalls in licensing must then be paid for, at a rate higher than the original license. This, Dolby says, shows that Adobe is clearly aware of why and how auditing takes place.

“After more than three years of attempting to audit Adobe’s Sales of products containing Dolby Technologies, Dolby still has not received the information required to complete an audit for the full time period,” Dolby explains.

But during this period, Adobe didn’t stand still. According to Dolby, Adobe tried to obtain new licensing from Dolby at a lower price. Dolby stood its ground and insisted on an audit first but despite an official demand, Adobe didn’t provide the complete set of books and records requested.

Eventually, Dolby concluded that Adobe had “no intention to fully comply with its audit obligations” so called in its lawyers to deal with the matter.

“Adobe’s direct and induced infringements of Dolby Licensing’s copyrights in the Asserted Dolby Works are and have been knowing, deliberate, and willful. By its unauthorized copying, use, and distribution of the Asserted Dolby Works and the Adobe Infringing Products, Adobe has violated Dolby Licensing’s exclusive rights..,” the lawsuit reads.

Noting that Adobe has profited and gained a commercial advantage as a result of its alleged infringement, Dolby demands injunctive relief restraining the company from any further breaches in violation of US copyright law.

“Dolby now brings this action to protect its intellectual property, maintain fairness across its licensing partnerships, and to fund the next generations of technology that empower the creative community which Dolby serves,” the company concludes.

Dolby’s full complaint can be found here (pdf).
Comment: This could mean that Adobe products will be facing a pice increase. Thankfully I use another product when it comes to video editing.

Fox Boss on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival – Variety

Quote:

JERUSALEM — With reboots and revivals dominating the television landscape, it’s only natural that studios are scouring their archives for the titles worth dusting off. So it comes as little surprise that Fox has looked at bringing back cult favorite “Buffy the Vampire Slayer

“I think if you look in our library, ‘Buffy’ is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back,” said Fox TV group chair Gary Newman at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem. But he acknowledged that he “wouldn’t get out of the building alive” if he actually announced it.

“It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with,” he said. “When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen.”

Despite the network’s recent revivals of “The X-Files,” “24” and “Prison Break” — along with the pilot “Greatest American Hero,” in development for ABC — Newman said that such efforts “aren’t actually a focus” for the studio.

“Most times when we brought things back, it started with the creator coming into us and saying I’ve got another story I want to tell,” he said. “It seems to me that if there isn’t a real sense of nostalgia, a passionate fan base demonstrating they still want it then I don’t really buy bringing these shows back.”

Newman acknowledged, though, that revivals do have a built-in advantage when it comes to breaking through a noisy landscape. “I think more than anything it’s a marketing opportunity,” he said. “People are aware of the show, you don’t have to build awareness. If the show’s beloved, you get a great deal of intent to view right from the get go.”

But it has to be done with a legitimate sense of purpose. “Greatest American Hero,” he said, is being cast with a young Indian-American woman in the lead role. “If you do it cynically, if you don’t have a great creative reason to do it, I don’t think it’s going to work.”

Sky Q box and LG OLED55B6V TV

Has anyone with this TV had this problem?
i have been losing picture and sound intermittently since a new Q Silver box has been installed, with the external power supply.
When I called Sky, they said that there was a problem with the old box, but that was meant to be resolved with the new box.
The reason for this post is their "remedy" before an engineer comes is to replace the HDMI lead which they supplied in the first place.
Can anyone give me a technical reason how a cable can suddenly fail, which has never had an issue before?
My opinion is that it is the box with the problem as I have never had this issue before.
The issue is totally random in nature so the chances of it happening whilst the engineer is on site are low, but some days it happens every few minutes, which is very frustrating. Sometimes it is just a "hiccup" of vision and sound.
The fact that they seem to have an issue with LG TV's is interesting I would like to know if other LG owners are having any problems.

I have never had a problem accessing Sky Go but for the last couple of days I get "The Webpage Cannot be found" HTTP 404 Not Found. However it can be accessed on Chrome and Firefox, although due to the need for Silverlight have to use an IE tab on Chrome.

I am wondering if this has been caused by a recent Windows 10 update. Any advice would be appreciated.

Swap SR102 for a Sky Q router - help please

Hi there. Newbie's first post so please be gentle with me! :)

I currently have an SR102 router (standard broadband, not fibre) and have been given a Sky Q router by someone who has recently left Sky (and does not need to return the router).

Can I simply swap over to the Q router or, as I suspect is more likely, have to change the existing internal username and password for the ones that are buried in my SR102?

If so, how do I get the new info into the Q router? I've found ways to extract my details from the SR102 (using wireshark) but not how to put it into the Q.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Caroline

Internet disconnecting every night at 00.20 since Friday...

Hey, so since last Friday my Internet is going down every night at exactly 00.20, and everything loses connection, PC (Wired), Phone, Sky Boxes, Ipad. I can go into the router settings and disconnect and reconnect and the internet comes straight back.

I have called Sky today and spoke with a guy that did some tests that all came back clear, he said it believes its an issue with the router and is sending a new one out.

I didn't know if anyone has had the problem before, I used to get one of these disconnects around the same time every 2 weeks or so and always put it down to sky doing maintenance, but it seems odd that it would happen 4 nights in a row now.

Confusing situation.

Turning off the mini's Wi-Fi when ethernet connected

$

Hi all.

I’m after some advice on my Sky Q setup. I work in IT as a system officer so not afraid to delve into settings and make changes (fiddle).

My Sky Q Silver 2Tb is located in my lounge and is Wi-Fi connected to my Sky Q hub which is in my home office (I’m not able to run Ethernet between the two because of the distance and location). In my home office I also have a mini box (connected to my TV so I can watch sport in peace) which IS Ethernet connected to my hub as its only 2/3 metres away.

My question is, should I turn the Wi-Fi off on this mini as I don’t need it to act as a hotspot since the Sky hub is in the same room. Will that affect the mesh network in anyway and will I lose anything? Or is it best to leave the Wi-Fi switched on and the Sky service will simply use the Ethernet link (as its stronger) and the Wi-Fi will sit there as a backup.

I also have another mini in the kitchen. That is Ethernet connected to the silver box (not the Sky hub) as it’s going through a half metre thick solid stone wall and the Wi-Fi from the silver box isn’t strong enough to reach in there. That mini has its Wi-Fi turned on to provide the kitchen with a hotspot and that’s working well.

I have read multiple articles that the mesh network the Sky Q service provides is not the same “network” that devices in the home (iPads, iPhones, laptops etc.) use for connectivity?????
